The Little Book of Tube Etiquette Laura King 9780956710192 Books

After reading the introduction to this truly tasteless drink-coaster of a book, it's obvious that the reader is in for 64 pages of pure, unimaginative, stuck-up drivel. The intro explains that the book is the product of a "wine-soaked evening" of friends sharing drinks and whining about their troubles on the subway system. The rest of the book reveals that pretty much everyone (culpable or not) is fair game for Mrs. King, who doesn't seem to like anyone on the tube at all and who feels that her ridiculous rules should apply to everyone but her hypocritical, over-privileged, selfish self. (Imagine my lack of surprise upon discovering that she works in marketing...ugh).

Take, for example, her suggestion that people who are too large for a single seat shouldn't be allowed to sit at all: "please don't sit down - the standing will do you good." According to Mrs. King's twisted, discriminatory worldview, the obese should be forced to pay double to ride the metro (a public service), or they should be forced to stand. Frankly, it's just sickening.

And then there are gems where Mrs. King's apparent omniscience gives her license to judge and denigrate those around her. For example, "Don't laugh out loud when reading a paper, book or text message, it's not funny enough o warrant a laugh-out-loud moment, trust me oh attention seeker." I wasn't aware the author, or anyone for that matter, had the ability to decide what is funny to laugh about. Given the grimace that will inevitably cross the face of any reader with the maturity to see outside their own tiny bubble for five seconds, it seems pretty obvious that Mrs. King doesn't have the faintest clue as to what differentiates toddler-esque whining from, say, anything remotely funny.

Or how about Mrs. King's complete reversal of etiquette opinion in chapter 5: "How to Get a Seat"? Here, she goes on to recommend a number of tricks to get a seat on the subway, most of which are not fair to those around you, thus contradicting her stance for fair etiquette in the previous chapters and, I may add (according to the title), the main purpose of the book. "...Others may hate you for it but it's a perfectly acceptable method." (these rude, childish suggestions go on for some time, but I'll spare you).

In short, unless you want to wade through a (grown?) woman's whining about how awful the tube and everyone (except Mrs. King, of course!) who rides it is, please, PLEASE pass on this book - don't support this shameful, pathetic attempt at creativity/humor.

The Little Book of Tube Etiquette Laura King 9780956710192 Books Reviews

I bought this for my nephew who works in London and uses the Underground on a daily basis. It's full of witty observations and so accurate! I travel on buses as well and plenty of the things this book mentions apply to that as well. Very recommended.
